This is a particularly interesting painting
unearthed and acquired, through detective
work, for the exhibition. Still Life 1959 is
unusual, being oil on blackout curtain. The
latter was provided by Geoffrey’s mother,
Marion, and had to be stretched by hand
onto a picture frame.

It was the first Key painting ever to be
sold and given its ad hoc construction
is a most unusual, if not unique
exhibit. Look at the patina of the paint
for hints of the unusual background.
A particularly mature study for one so
young whose talent was recognised,
even in those early years.
